The next tip in the adoption of introducing and adopting new technology is the benefit of committing resources to the cause. Committing resources for me is about three key parts: people, time and budget.

People
Change in technology affects people. So, let’s start with them first and make sure we have identified early on who will be impacted, who will be driving the change (including choosing the implementation team) and how we can get the exec team involved and then continue to drive the change through champions. 

 

These champions can be found at any level of the organisation and benefit from the introduced technology, i.e. accounting software to help the finance manager. They lead the way for others to use the technology and usually are well connected, enabling them to introduce the technology to more people.

 

In the hierarchical sense, executives have the greatest influence on culture, and their participation is essential in driving employees’ adoption of new technologies. 

 

Time 
This is about giving the organisation appropriate time to change. Prepare for a learning curve and take the time to assess the skills and knowledge that the change team will need to acquire.

 

You will also need to consider the technology adoption cycle: there will be early adopters and laggards, so not everyone will adopt at the same rate. Ensure your expectations for adoption are realistic, given the diversity of your workforce. 

 

Budget
The real return on adoption comes from embedding new work practices into the processes and ultimately the culture of organisations.  Companies often focus on the most tangible part first – deploying the technology and adoption is left for later, and often “later” never comes.

 

Plan and budget for adoption from the start. Take into account the people, process and structural changes. Budget for the communication, training and organisational development required to succeed. And ensure that proper governance and metrics are in place to monitor progress.
