SharePoint Server 2016 is the latest version of Microsoft's popular team collaboration software. Microsoft has been underground for the past 3 years developing the latest and most powerful version of SharePoint. The newest platform is packed with some great new features. We’ve gathered all of the key information you should know about this update and put it into this one handy guide.

To give a bit of a background on the current landscape of SharePoint:

  • 65,000+ customers and 100M Licenses
  • Roughly 1 million SharePoint developers ($6B-$7B ecosystem)
  • Over 80% of Fortune 500 companies use SharePoint
  • ClearPeople hold the prestigious title as a Microsoft Gold Partner
Release date: Spring 2016

Installation

  • Installation now includes Role Management; this role allows servers in a multi-server farm to have services run on a server depending on which role the server is on, i.e. Search Role, Front End Role etc.

Migration

  • Don’t sweat – migration has been streamlined to make migration from SharePoint 2013 to 2016 an easy process
  • Downside: you can’t migrate from SharePoint 2010 and earlier versions as SharePoint 2013 will be the stepping stone for upgrades

Microsoft is enhancing core features on SharePoint. Here are the three areas they focused on:

  • User Experience
  • Hybrid
  • People-centric compliance

Let’s dig into these…

User Experiences

  • Mobile experiences
    • This means you’ll have consistent experiences across all screens without compromising feature fidelity
  • Introducing App Launcher
    • A new App Launcher makes it easier for users to open applications from the navigation bar inside SharePoint whilst leveraging any 3rd party apps you might have
  • Personalised insight

Hybrid

  • Cloud hybrid search allows Office 365 users who also run on-premises SharePoint servers to seamlessly access files stored in their company servers as well as those stored in Microsoft’s cloud
  • Cloud service apps allows Delve to surface on-premise and cloud data across Office 365 and SharePoint in a single view
  • The ability to reduce your on-premises search footprint.
  • Leveraging users by having one identity for them across on-premise services and the cloud
  • Hybrid cloud with global reach (search and discovery is now much easier)

The Cloud Hybrid approach will certainly reduce the emphasis on IT and streamline administrative tasks, so IT professionals can concentrate on core competencies and mitigate costs.

Infrastructure

  • Improved performance and reliability
  • Improved provisioning capabilities
  • Support and monitoring tools
And now, the hybrid approach we’ve all been waiting for! Here’s what it can do for you:

Compliance

  • Introduction of Data Loss Prevention (DLP) – Enables you to monitor, protect sensitive information and seamlessly integrate DLP into office products
  • SharePoint 2016 will provide a broad array of features and capabilities such as monitoring tools for DLP
  • Cloud connected compliance, security and threat protection for both admins and users

Other key features include

  • The option to crawl in-market and legacy versions of SharePoint, such as 2007, 2010 and 2013, without requiring upgrade of those versions
  • SharePoint Online will now allow up to 1TB of storage for OneDrive for Business and SharePoint site collections in Office 365
  • 100,000 site collections per content database
  • Increased list threshold is now greater than 5,000
  • The 2GB File size upload has also been increased to 10GB
  • Avoiding the cost of sustaining large indexes, as it’s hosted in Office 365
  • Microsoft has also simplified the controls for sharing files
  • Zero downtime patching – No more monthly CUs. All SharePoint upgrades will run online
There it is! SharePoint 2016 in a nutshell.
