Cystic Fibrosis Trust’s journey to the Cloud

How Cystic Fibrosis Trust’s journey to the Cloud contributed to it being named the Workplace Transformation Project of the Year

Cystic Fibrosis Trust was announced the winner of the Workplace Transformation Project of the Year at the 2015 UKIT Industry Awards run by BCS, The Chartered Institute of IT, and Computing.

Cystic Fibrosis Trust (CFT) fought off some tough competition from the likes of Network Rail and Landmarc Support Services to be recognised as the organisation with the most outstanding IT project that uses enterprise mobility and collaborative technologies to transform the workplace with device and location independent services.

So how did they do it? In their own words, CFT was a “dinosaur” when it came to IT and infrastructure, operating from neglected offices in Bromley in a forest of tangled servers and databases. Their website and intranet was no longer fit for purpose with its users struggling to communicate effectively.

In order to be a “Digital First” organisation and help them to achieve ambitious plans for the future, CFT worked with ClearPeople, a Microsoft Gold Partner and Cloud expert, to detangle their hosting infrastructure and move to Azure.

The solution enabled the Trust to deploy a scalable and future-proof infrastructure quickly at minimum cost, providing a new way of working for its employees and volunteers. With many of these people living with cystic fibrosis themselves, they are unable to meet in person so the ease of working remotely on multiple devices with single-sign on access to documents and resources has massively improved productivity for the organisation.

The move to new shiny offices in Aldgate was communicated internally through their SharePoint intranet homepage and the introduction of Yammer has allowed increased involvement and collaboration with employees and people with cystic fibrosis, and increased visibility and engagement for remote workers.

Lucy Semmens Director of Strategy and Performance at the Cystic Fibrosis Trust said:

“This project has been an integral part of the Cystic Fibrosis Trust’s transformation to ensure it’s in the best possible shape to help transform the lives of people living with cystic fibrosis.

“Our home-based colleagues are confronted with a lot less barriers now which is especially important for those living with cystic fibrosis. Cross infection puts people at risk, so while there can only be one person with the condition in the building at any one time, through improved remote working they now appear in meetings through the TV, and can have informal chats as if they were in the office.

“This was a huge project in short timescale which has helped reduce budgets rather than add. Last year everyone was fixed to a desk without document management and little remote access. To say that this has increased productivity and efficiency for the Trust would be an understatement. We are very proud of how far we have come and are looking forward to building on this in future.”

The annual UKIT Awards provide a platform for the entire IT profession to celebrate best practice, innovation and excellence. In total 25 awards were presented covering project, organisational, technology, and personal excellence and other winners on the night included BT, Royal Mail and the Met Office.

Paul Fletcher, Group Chief Executive Officer of BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT, said: “Congratulations to all the winners and those who were highly commended in our UK IT Industry 2015 Awards. BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT, is here to make IT good for society. The Awards are a major part of this, demonstrating how excellence is being achieved across the IT profession. This year the calibre of applications we received was outstanding, but the winners stood out as exceptional and inspiring, and they should be very proud of their success.”
