13 Nov 2014 The Crown Estate ‘Marine Data Exchange’ project implemented by ClearPeople has triumphed at the BCS & Computing UK IT Industry Awards, taking home the trophy for the Best not for profit IT Project and Highly Commended in the Best Use of Cloud Services category. Announced at a glitzy ceremony at the Battersea Park Events Arena in London in front of 1,300 guests, we’re delighted the project has been recognised at the awards which are regarded as the benchmark for outstanding performance throughout the UK computer industry. The awards focus on the contribution of individuals, projects, organisations and technologies that have excelled in the use, development and deployment of IT in the past 12 months. The Crown Estate, which is responsible for managing the U.K. seabed, faced the challenge of managing up to 1 petabyte of data originating from various sources. ClearPeople connected Microsoft SharePoint with Windows Azure to share and exchange this ‘big data’ with marine renewable energy developers and the public. The processes of managing, releasing, exposing and delivering data have been greatly optimised, with SharePoint acting as the hub orchestrating these processes – saving The Crown Estate over 7,500 hours per year. With Windows Azure, The Crown Estate deployed the scalable cloud-based solution with zero infrastructure required, saving in excess of £2.2m (US$3.6m) a year compared to traditional hosting requirements.
